Seven Ways to Enjoy Movies on a Budget

In a tight budget, entertainment is usually one of the first line items to go, or at least to be reduced drastically. One of the favorite ways that most of us entertain ourselves is through television or movies. Here are seven ways that you can enjoy movies, even when you are on a budget. 1. Free Rentals. Redbox, the movie rental machine that is available at many grocery stores and drug stores offers movie (and game) rentals for $1 or $2 a night. This is inexpensive in itself, however, the company also offers Redbox coupon codes that can be used … Continue reading

Five Free Family Fun Moments

Family fun doesn’t have to be expensive or even cost a thing at all. While taking in a movie and snacks at the theater might cost you $60 or more per family, isn’t it nice to know that there are still some things in life that are free? 1. Family game night. The popularity of family game night might have started as a marketing campaign for Hasbro to get you to buy more games, but the idea is not a bad one. Many of us grew up playing board games and have many fond memories of the hours we spent … Continue reading

Crafts for Less

Logan and I have always loved doing crafts together, but they can get rather pricey if you’re not careful. When I got divorced I was afraid this little bonding time would be over. How could I possibly afford to get craft supplies when I could barely get food on the table? This year all those uncertainties have gone out the window. I discovered the joy of crafting for less! Logan and I have been doing countless Christmas crafts this year. Tonight I pulled out the popsicle sticks. If you look hard enough you can usually find a box of 1000 … Continue reading

Wreck-It Ralph Brings Gaming to the Movies

How have I not heard of this before now? Disney has a new animated movie coming out November 2, called “Wreck It Ralph.” I’d seen that title before in a list of upcoming movies, and I knew it had something to do with an arcade, but I didn’t know that 1) it was coming out so soon and 2) that it sounded so awesome. I have to say I’ve been a little hesitant about any animated film coming out of Disney lately that isn’t either a fairy tale film or from Pixar. I love “Emperor’s New Groove” and “Lilo & … Continue reading

Tom Hanks to Play Walt Disney in “Poppins” Movie

Earlier in the year the internet was abuzz about a fake movie poster created by French graphic artist Pascal Witaszek. It featured actor (and former Mouseketeer) Ryan Gosling with dark hair and a mustache reclining in a train car. He held a pencil poised above a drawing pad. Outside the window a cloud formed the shape of a Mickey Mouse head with ears. The poster was for a Walt Disney biopic entitled “Walt,” starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Ron Howard. It was entirely fake, but plausible enough that it really got people thinking. What would a Walt Disney biopic … Continue reading

Taking Care of Children: Priceless

Clearly, I am in the wrong line of work. Can’t stand the sight of blood, so medicine is out; not great with numbers, so hedge fund manager is not an option. However, I do love kids, even ones that aren’t mine, so why am I not raking in the dough? Because I am not a babysitter in California. If you thought it was costing you an arm and a leg to fund your monthly date night in the Golden State now, just wait until a new bill passes. You may be a paraplegic before your kids enter high school. Assemblyman … Continue reading

Fun in the Dark

Not that kind of fun… As of this writing, nearly four million residents living along the East Coast of the United States are without power right now thanks to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene. NBC News showed families in North Carolina cooking on an open fire in their backyards because they were still without electricity more than 24 hours after Irene made landfall. Despite the fact that these particular families had no power, they seemed remarkably upbeat. One mom commented that her four children were getting a bit stir crazy minus the lack of television, video games and movies. Still, there is … Continue reading

Get a Coupon for Free Food at the Movies

Going to see a movie, in an actual movie theater, can be expensive. You might be paying for parking, depending on if the theater has it’s own parking lot of if it lacks one. The price of movie tickets, even during an afternoon matinee, seems to go up every year. If you would like to have something to eat or drink while you watch the movie, well, that’s going to cost you some money as well. Unless, of course, you print out a coupon from the theater, and bring it with you. For a lot of people, watching a movie … Continue reading
