Childhood Obsessions: The Freakin’ Fish Song

“Do fish know that it is Christmas? DofishknowthatitisChristmas? DO FISH KNOW THAT IT IS CHRISTMAS? Or.Are.They.Confused?” The aforementioned words, sung to the tune of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” may be the death of me yet. Thanks a lot PBS! For 58 straight minutes on Thanksgiving morning my 5-year-old sat motionless in front of the television, completely and utterly entranced by “Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas.” At the time I was elbow-deep in raw turkey carcass, unstuffed stuffing and uncooked potatoes. Consequently, I was grateful that good ol’ George the monkey was occupying my kid while I got … Continue reading

Frozen Treats Galore: A Berry Yummy Dessert

There’s something about summer that simply demands you eat a fair share of berries. It’s more than the fact that they’re in season and consequently cheaper–it’s that they’re simply beckoning with their juiciness. (Really–can’t you hear the strawberries beckoning now?) Okay, so maybe I’m a little obsessed. But obsession lead to the delicious re-creation of this creamy strawberry frozen dessert. If you think blueberry sauce is odd with the frozen strawberries and cream, you can go ahead and substitute more strawberries for the sauce. However, dare I say, you don’t dismiss it until you try it! You will need: 2 … Continue reading

My Kitchen Obsession

By now, anyone who has spent any time at all reading my blogs, will realize immediately which room in my house is my favorite. Yes, that would be my kitchen. I’m not sure when my obsession with the kitchen came about, but it sure has been around for a long time. I’m also not sure why it came about either, though perhaps it could be because of my love of food. Period. I love food. I also love to cook, which causes me to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen. With my large family of seven, I … Continue reading

Learning the Alphabet Part V

Part of his seemingly sudden interest in the alphabet is due to my obsession with writing names but also in part due to his one year old sister’s recent interest in his fridge phonics toy.  He could not have cared less about until she showed some fascination with it and now he thinks it is one of the best toys in the house. It is unnerving how that seems to work. The two of them would stand in the kitchen and he would put the letters into the toy and she would press them so that the toy would start … Continue reading

A Busy Guy

My son is a busy guy. His day begins when ever he wakes up (like most kids) usually around eight in the morning. Sometimes he will climb into our bed with some toys and play which always involves playing with his baby sister. Rousing us (the parents) at eight in the morning is sometimes difficult given how late we end up going to bed, but he does a fairly good job by climbing on us and typically putting his feet, knees, elbows, or hands in our faces. Now that he is potty trained, he will need to use the potty … Continue reading

The ABC’s of Frustration With Genealogy

Genealogy is one of the hobbies that can be enlightening and educational. It is an excellent way to learn more about your ancestors. On the other hand, there are many things about genealogy that are as frustrating as can be! Are you a frustrated genealogist? If so, you may get a laugh out of what I like to call “The ABC’s of Frustration With Genealogy”! A is for ancestor, whom I cannot find. The search is driving me out of my mind! B is for bedtime, but not for me. I’m still hard at work on my family tree! C … Continue reading

Have a Merry Minted Christmas

I don’t drink, but walking into Target or Wal-Mart right now makes me want to run home and pour myself a boot of something stronger than beer. Tis the season for breakouts and breakdowns. Seriously. Have you been to the mall recently? Retailers have dumped their Halloween costumes and candy; bypassed Thanksgiving paraphernalia; and are shoving Santa down customers’ collective throats. Fa-la-la-la. We’re not even 85 hours into November and I already feel my inner Christmas Grinch bubbling up from the bowels of my being. How can I feel so behind on Christmas preparations when I still have buckets of … Continue reading

An Answer for Everything

She may not be old enough to cross the street by herself or cut her own meat. Heck, she can’t even reach the bathroom faucet without the help of a stool, but my 5-year-old daughter is never short on answers. The kid has a retort for everything. Her opinions flow like liquid mercury down a steep hill. Her insistence to have the last word on everything would be infinitely annoying; however, most of her back talk is not meant to be sassy or rude. Rather, my daughter truly believes that what she has to say is valuable, and she’ll stop … Continue reading

Our “Jon & Kate” Moments

With all of the controversy surrounding TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus Eight, I started thinking about what life might be like if we were on a reality show and cameras were catching our every move. Would I be like precise no-nonsense Kate Gosselin or like nurturing Aunt Jodi? And what kind of awkward moments would be captured for all of the world to see that would have people wondering about the parenting style we use with our little ones or actively criticizing our lives. The hairdo A lot has been said about Kate’s wacky hair do that she calls her … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning is a Family Affair

Well, my obsession with spring cleaning is finally being noticed by the rest of my family, especially my husband. I approached the subject yesterday and mentioned how this year I really needed the whole family to pull together to get it done. While I normally handle the bulk if not all of the spring cleaning myself, this year it has to be different. We’ve been in our new home for almost two years now. Much of the cleaning and repairing time has been ongoing since then. The first few months saw a flurry of cleaning, because the house had been … Continue reading
