My Secret Exception

Every frugal person has a secret vice that they can’t resist buying even at full price. For some that item(s)is very inexpensive such as comic books or mints. For others, it could be the reason for their overall frugalness, to be able to afford their vice. I just read about one such exception to frugality in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, where the writer tells about how much they spend on their furry friend when they skimp on themselves. After reading this I had to ask myself what it was that causes me to have bouts of financial insanity. My … Continue reading

Buy One, Get One at Payless

One of my favorite places to shop for new boots, shoes, and sandals is at Payless Shoes. I can always find something really cute, at an inexpensive price. Another thing I really love about Payless is that even through their shoes are reasonably priced, this doesn’t stop them from having sales. This is where I go to shop when I want new shoes, but don’t have very much money to spend on them. When it comes to shopping, I tend to be very frugal. Most of my clothing comes from the many thrift and goodwill stores that are in my … Continue reading

Six Flags Minus the Scares

Bloody appendages, stabbed rats, decapitated creatures, knife-wielding, pig-faced butchers and intestine-covered caskets don’t make for sweet dreams, especially if you’re a six-year-old looking to meet Bugs Bunny for the first time. Thankfully, the folks at Six Flags Great America realize this. Hence the decision to keep certain portions of the theme park scare-free for its youngest guests during its annual Fright Fest extravaganza, which runs weekends throughout October. If the popular Gurnee, Illinois, attraction didn’t offer thrills without chills, then there would be no way that I could have spent last Saturday making magical memories with my daughter at Six … Continue reading

A Green Pregnancy

I’m not one to jump on the bandwagon “just because,” but I’m glad to see environmentalism reach a peak of popularity in our society. Living “green” is often synonymous with a frugal lifestyle, living responsibly and gratitude for our resources. No matter what your reasons are for going green, it’s a move that benefits everyone. You can do little things in every area of your life to reduce your footprint, even during pregnancy. Having a green pregnancy could mean restricting yourself to a completely organic diet, but not everyone has that kind of grocery budget and there is more to … Continue reading

Chelsea Clinton Gets Married

It has been one of the most anticipated weddings of the summer and now it is over. Today, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton married Mac Mezvinsky, an investment banker. Clinton and Mezvinsky have known each other for years, meeting when she was just 13. His parents are former Pennsylvania congresswoman Marjorie and former Iowa representative Edward. Both Clinton and Mezvinsky attended Stanford University, but he was a year ahead of her. Clinton dated Ian Klaus, whom she met when she was at Oxford University in England, but the two broke up in 2003. The first public sighting of Clinton and … Continue reading

Key Ingredients in Marriage

Recently a group of women sat together around the table. The eight women were a mixture: a couple were on their second marriage while others had been married once or twice and had no intention of doing it ever again. As one woman said, ‘Once was enough.’ Of all the eight women only two could say, ‘If I could go back in time knowing what I know now, I’d get married again. But only if it was to the same man – my husband.’ The other woman of the two said, ‘I’m happily married and have never regretted being married … Continue reading

Frugal Ideas for The Christmas Sweater

Some time ago I wrote about my frugal exception. In this blog I described the one thing that I really couldn’t cut corners on. My secret is that I never purchase used shoes. I prefer to get these new. I nearly forgot about my Christmas sweater obssession. I love Christmas sweaters and try to get a enw one very year. But buying a somewhat gaudy sweater that I will only wear for one season is a collosal waste of money. Here are some furgual tips that I used to enjoy the Christmas sweater season each each year. 1. Keep it … Continue reading

Chili Corn Meatballs

When we’re cooking meals every day, it’s easy to get so stuck in the rut of using the same tried and proven recipes that we forget to venture out and try something new, or we simply can’t be bothered. I have a few books where I have written out some of my favorites over the years. The other day I was looking for another recipe, when I came across this one. ‘Oh, that used to be good and we haven’t had that in ages ‘I said to my husband who agreed. So I made it that week. One thing I … Continue reading

Why I Love the Bob Books

About two months ago, my daughter finally showed an interest in reading and writing. Just as I was lamenting the fact that she had absolutely no interest in learning about written language, she started trying to draw letters and recognize them in books. I was excited, since reading and buying books is one of my pleasures in life, and I am thrilled to see her beginning to explore that world. When children first start reading, adults usually give them words like their name or the sides of milk cartons to practice on. The kids also get to practice on words … Continue reading

What’s Wrong with Young Marriages?

You often hear meaning people say that some couples are too young to get married. There is a theory and some evidence to suggest that young marriages don’t work. Yet years ago, many people were married much younger than they are today. Once 18 wasn’t considered young to get married. In fact you will find many of those who have been married fifty years or more would have been married around this age or certainly before 21. Do the math. You’d have to be married fairly young or live a long time to rack up that many years. In the … Continue reading
