New Year Deals at the Library

by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger

The month of January is one of my favorite times to visit the library. This isn't because they have any really special programs going on or a slew of new books to check out. Instead it is because of all of the things that they no longer have, well, want.

In January, our local libraries start cleaning out some things and make them available for sale to the general public. Books, magazines, CDs and movies are available at really inexpensive prices.

Books

Libraries get a lot of book donations close to the end of the year, as people are going through their things and wanting to donate to make the cut off for the tax year. In addition to that, many libraries re-evaluate their inventory, getting rid of books that aren't requested as much, such as extra copies of titles that were once so hot that they needed to provide a bunch of the same book, to books that just aren't being found. The later category always produces some interesting reads.

Magazines

How about an entire year's worth of magazine for just a dollar or two? The library will sell off last year's entire collection. While some of these magazines may be dated, most of them will still yield a lot of great information, such as recipes, craft ideas, fiction, beauty tips, how to and more. Read them all at once or take them month by corresponding month. What a nice gift for someone in the hospital, too.

DVDs and Videos

DVDs and videos, while harder to score are still plentiful at the end of the year. This is especially true for children's videos and movies. You can often pick up some DVDs for the car or home for a dollar or two. Books on CD and computer game CDs fall into this same category.
