can Would you like to earn some extra money? Prices paid for scrap metal have greatly increased, making a few pounds of scrap turn into enough money to fill up your tank.

The price of scrap copper has increased from $1 to $3 a pound, while aluminum cans have gone up from 30 cents a pound to 80 cents a pound. Increasingly, frugal people are turning to scrap metal collection to put gas in their cars and pay for the increase in food prices.

Collecting scrap metal and then selling it is not as hard as it sounds. You can simply save any aluminum cans you might otherwise recycle and sell those. You can hunt through your garage and home for scrap metal that you can sell. When you are renovating your home, set aside anything that could be sold. Some examples of items that can be sold for scrap metal include pipes, wiring, shower door frames and aluminum window frames.

And you can also find discarded scrap metal available for free.

How do you find free scrap metal? One sure way is to find out when your area towns are hosting their bulk trash days. Very often you'll find tons of scrap metal that is being tossed out for the garbage collectors. Arrive early the night before, since there will be a lot of competition. You can also cruise around your local area on the night before regular garbage pick up to find items.

Farm equipment can yield a lot of scrap metal. Offer to take an old rotting piece of equipment off someone's hands, and you could earn hundreds of dollars.

Recycling centers that pay for scrap metal are doing a brisk business right now and more and more of them are popping up all over the country. Some centers even pay for paper. In fact, the price of scrap is so high, that it is sparking thefts in many areas. Several states are addressing the issue with new laws that require the dealers to hold on to items for a set time period to ensure that the items aren't reported missing. In our case, we had a television antenna stolen by a chimney sweep! There is a lot of scrap to be found just around your home.

Do you have an old radiator or metal swing set? Turn it in for some extra gas money.

When our boys where younger my husband was able to get scrap metal from work. I remember one night stripping rubber, or something like that, and taking the cooper out of it. Back in the mid-90's we would get over a hundred dollars. Not to bad. Groceries, diapers, etc. Laura

Too bad I never saved my orthodontic work after it was removed years ago. ;-) Mary Ann, were you ever able to get the antenna back, and did you confront the chimney sweep or his/her employer about the theft?

Mary Ann Romans Online! (26886) 07 Aug 2008 03:49 AM

I didn't pursue the theft. The man had six children, and I could only think the money might be going to them. I won't use the service again, though. What gets me is that this was a supposedly "Christian" business.

I know what you mean. Although stealing isn't right, at least you were able to put a positive spin on it, in order to have inner peace.

Mary Ann Romans Online! (26886) 09 Aug 2008 03:40 AM

Hey Tashi, I didn't think of it that way. Thanks!

Here people steal metal to sell it, especially lead from churches, so you have to prove to the scrap yard that you own the metal, unless it is something small like cans.

usually just cans...I have thought about asking our friends who don't recycle if we could have their cans but I feel a little strange doing that lol

Mary Ann Romans Online! (26886) 10 Aug 2008 04:15 AM

Oh that is awful Samual

Mary Ann Romans Online! (26886) 10 Aug 2008 04:16 AM

Maybe you could give them a bin that they could place outside of their house. Tell them you are making an effort to recycle and would gladly pick up the cans whenever they are available.

Samual (11722) 11 Aug 2008 04:26 AM

Kara, here in the UK everyone has to recycle otherwise your bin is not emptied and you recieve a fine.

I have old cabinet pulls and old handles from dressers. Does anyone know if I can recycle these for money? How can I tell what type of metal they are made from?

Mary Ann Romans Online! (26886) 17 Mar 2009 11:19 AM

Scrap metal is generally purchased by the pound, so unless your pulls are quite numerous, it might not be worth trying to sell them. Prices since I originally wrote the post are way down, although copper can still be worth selling.

i agree with Ann Romans, scrap metal prices are really not that high as they were. But it is still possible to earn on scrap metal quite nice cash. Although, there aren't enough information about this topic (identifying scrap metal kinds, selling profitably, searching for it) buti came across a nice link the other day i can share it if anybody is interested..

Thanks scrpex.
