Here is a special secret for saving as much as 50 percent on meat, fish and poultry at the grocery store.

Meat seems to be one of those foods that just seems to go up in price by the month. Incorporating meat-less meals into your diet is one way to save on the cost of it all. But unless the members of your family are ready to become vegetarians, you still want to be able to provide them with meals that contain meat, and fish and poultry.

One strategy is to wait for the buy one get one free sales. These usually occur on items such as chicken breasts, whole chickens and pot roasts. This is an especially good deal when you find these deals on the generic or store brand versions of your meat, fish and poultry.

Then there are other strategies, such as buying a whole cow that can save you money. This is when you contact a local farmer to buy one whole cow, often already butchered. with the meat divided into various cuts.

For the everyday meat purchase, you'll want to go and talk to one of the store's butchers. Ask them for any meat that it nearing its expiration date. meat, fish or poultry that is close to the sell by date can be had for very little money. You can find these items in your meat case. But by asking the butcher first, you'll get the best selection.

When you get home, just make sure to cook or freeze the meat within 24 hours for the best freshness. You can even time your purchases with some freezer cooking. Then you will have saved two ways: one by the actual purchase price of the meat, and one by having ready meals so you won't be tempted to eat out.
