Between Holiday Catch Up

The holidays certainly are a whirlwind of activity aren’t they? From cooking to cleaning to shopping and visiting, there is always so much to do. Before Christmas, I tried to anticipate this by having the laundry caught up and the house cleaned. But I still found myself baking cookies on Christmas eve afternoon and cleaning the bathrooms. Now, Christmas Day is gone, but New Year’s Eve and New Years Day are coming up. This means that I have a lot of catch up to do. Despite my initial efforts, the laundry has turned into a mountain, the ironing is slouching … Continue reading

Seven Frugal Holiday Activities

Don’t get caught up in the chaos of holiday spending. It even extends into activities, with Christmas shows, holiday photos with Santa, ice skating at the rink, etc. Instead, vow to spend zero on Christmas activities, here is how. 1.Check your local area for free Christmas events. Just looking at one website and one local paper, I’ve seen more than 40 free family holiday events, from a tree lighting that include free snacks and hot chocolate, to a living manger show, to free Christmas crafts for the kids to free holiday pops concerts. 2. Seven Days ‘til Christmas

Okay, the kids will be off school for Christmas vacation soon if they aren’t already. As we look forward to school or church parties and pageants, remember that once those events are over, children tend to get antsy. It’s hard not to do so with Christmas only a week away! At first, the kids are usually glad to be home, but it doesn’t take long to begin hearing, “I’m bored!” Plan ahead. Pick up some craft items if you don’t already have a good selection and plan some craft projects. Here are some ideas: Christmas Crafts: Music Inspired Decoration or … Continue reading

Frugal Living Week in Review: October 29th Through November 4th

Is it getting chilly where you live? The weather is certainly getting brisk here, and the heat seems to always be on. I’ve been setting the thermostat to about 64, and bundling everyone up with sweaters. I think we are getting used to the cooler temperatures, because when my husband comes home and pushed the heat to 70, the rest of us complain that it is too hot. How have you been saving money this week? If you could use some ideas, then why not take a look at all of the articles we posted here in the past seven … Continue reading

How Much Would You Spend on a Moonbounce Birthday Party?

My seven-year-old daughter, or miss popular as we like to call her, has been invited to a number of fun birthday parties, everything from a hip hop dance party to a rock-climbing party. Her own birthday is coming up, and she wants a cupcake-moonbounce-girlie party for all of her friends, whatever that means. The moonbounce idea was actually her father’s, who thought renting a moonbounce might be fun for the kids. I agree that it would be, but unfortunately, since her birthday is in November (and we live in an area that has dramatic changes in seasons), it will be … Continue reading

Entertaining Your Kids: You Don’t Have To Spend A Fortune

Sometimes the best things in life really are free. Take yesterday for instance. School is out for the holiday break and I have Tyler and my niece and nephew to entertain. What to do? What to do? The weather was so nice I decided to take them on a trip downtown. I needed to return some DVDs to the library anyway and since we can return items to any branch and there is a branch downtown I thought this would be perfect. Some would argue that there’s not much to do in downtown Mobile. In fact the city is in … Continue reading

The Household Notebook – Further Explained

Recently, my significant other asked me about my household notebook. He didn’t understand the value or reasoning behind it. Well, why not – his organizational methods included plastering a bulletin board with all important information. So I explained to him, in great length, why the household notebook is such a valuable tool. I’ve had mine now for about two years and love it. I’ve never been more organized and up to date on things. The household notebook goes with being organized, but it also is a very frugal way to live. It helps to contain everything you need in one … Continue reading
