Sharing Your Frugality With Your Family

Getting your family involved or even semi-interested in your frugal ways, or in saving money, can be a huge challenge. Most of the time, significant others don’t tend to see things the same way we do. And children usually have no concept of the value of money or what saving money can mean. This can really put a kink in your plan to save money, but there are some things you can do. Put it on paper Put it down in writing. Try keeping track of your savings for a couple of weeks. Write down the money you saved by … Continue reading

Planning a Frugal Resort Vacation pt 2

Summer is here and it is time to get away as a family. If you are like most families, you took a staycation s last year. This year, you may be more inclined to actually go somewhere special. A resort vacation will probably fit the bill. With that said, going to a resort for vacation does not mean throwing all rules on frugality out of the window. Instead, you should be even more frugal than normal in order to get the best vacation for the least money. In part 1 covered the early stages of planning such as determining your … Continue reading

The Frugal Gross Factor

We went shopping at the Goodwill yesterday, and it got me thinking once again about the different standards that people have when it comes to living frugally. Some people won’t shop at a thrift store, for example, because the stuff is used and that is “gross.” But, these same people will gladly shop at a garage sale, where the stuff is also used. Some of these standards, such as the one above, don’t make sense to me. While some practices that others find routine tend to “gross” me to no end. So, I was wondering, where do you fall when … Continue reading

Recession Food: Whole Turkey

As food prices are continuing to increase, so is the worry that many families, like my own, are facing. Staples such as milk, eggs, and now wheat will cost more that usual this year. Other products, such as corn and anything made with corn (which is a high percentage of foods, from goods made with high fructose corn syrup to processed meats) are also increasing due to the demand for corn crops being used as an alternative fuel. Add in the pressure of a recession, and well, let’s just say that it will take some clever shopping to make your … Continue reading

“Please Don’t Ask Me for Relationship Advice”

I have a strange reality in my world that I have not quite figured out yet. For some bazaar reason, several of my partnered and married friends want to talk to me about their partnership problems. These partnered parents seem to think that I am the one—me, the long-time single parent with a divorce record—to share advice and ideas about how to make the two-parent home life happy…why? I continue to tell them that I am the LAST person to ask for relationship advice and they probably don’t want to hear what I would have to say anyway—but it keeps … Continue reading

Friday Frugal Funnies: A Coupon Mishap

I’m not sure why, but reading other people’s mishaps and disaster stories that revolve around our nutty frugal behavior make me laugh harder than even some of the funniest jokes. Of course not all situations are bust a gut funny, some are merely “Oh my gosh I can relate” funny. Thus is the case with this story brought to you by my friend Cara who in her family is known as the frugal fanatic though I still think that title probably could best fit me. Cara shares here funny story: “Ok, well mine has little do with frugality and more … Continue reading
