Surviving a Low Thermostat (3)by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 30 Jan 2008 11:25 AM We have been talking about ways to make it easier to feel comfortable while keeping the thermostat low to save on heating costs. I have found that we have been saving a lot by putting up with a cooler home this during this winter. Along the way, I've learned a few things that has helped us feel more comfortable. And as an added bonus, I find that our bodies more adjusted to the outdoors, so we can spend more time going for walks, playing in the backyard and exploring a local botanical garden (Yes there is still plenty to do there.) Here are some more of the ways I have found to survive a low thermostat. Spend some time outside (see above) or in a colder part of the house. I find that if I have spent as little as 15-20 minutes in the basement doing laundry or upstairs folding clothes or cleaning (where our heat is set even lower), then when I return to the main part of the house I feel much warmer. This works also when I return from seeing my son to the end of the driveway to wait for his bus outside, or when I come back to the house after meeting him coming home. A quick way to get warm is to be active. Instead of huddling under a blanket, put on some music and dance around with the kids. Or take the time to do heavy chores. Just bouncing a soft ball around the living room seems to warm everyone up here. And did you know that your body burns more calories at a cooler temperature? It takes more calories to keep you warm, so you might even loose a pound or two! If you are active, you can double your results. Guess what? There are still some more ways to survive that low thermostat. I hope you will come back and read some more!
