Ten Ways Being Organized Can Save Money

My sister-in-law is a born organizer. She seems to know instinctively how to run a household that is neat and tidy. I never heard of her losing her keys or misplacing a bill. It is just not part of her nature.

Me, on the other hand...well let's just say I have to work on the organized part. People are surprised when I tell them that I am not an organized person. I rarely miss my work deadlines and can tell any member of my family where any particular thing is in the house, be it a salami or a sock. The house is usually clean. But there is no way any of this organization comes naturally. I have to work at it. My motivation? Saving money of course.

Here are ten ways being organized saves money:

• You save money by having available coupons that didn't expire three months before your first child was born.
• You save money on late fees you would get charged with missed payments for bills.
• You save money by taking advantage of rebates. If you forget to turn in the rebate or can't find it, you've lost money.
• You save money by not making emergency purchases, such as ibuprofen or diapers and paying full price.
• You save money by not buying two of something because you can't find the first one you have. This is the reason we now have three vegetable peelers.
• You save money by not wasting gas on making extra trips to the grocery store because you don't have anything on hand for dinner or have run out of toilet paper.
• You save money by not spending money on lunches and dinners because you didn't have time to make them yourself.
• You save money by not losing credit on gift cards or credit receipts that are misplaced.
• You save money by not overspending because you have no idea what your budget is.
• You save money by not having to replace items because you don't maintain them regularly. This can be anything from changing the oil in your car to changing the filter in your home heating system.
