Adjusting Your Price Book with Escalating Grocery Costs

In the previous article, Our Changing Grocery Prices, I talked about how we’ve been having to adjust what we are willing to pay for some grocery items, in the wake of rising food prices. I shared some concrete examples of items from my mental price books and how I have had to adjust them, such as cereal, apples and eggs. Making these adjustments can be tough. Since prices aren’t steady, it is hard to know what the lowest price on something is or will be. Milk at $4 a gallon seems outrageous, until it rises to $4.50 on average. I … Continue reading

Our Changing Grocery Prices

Have you had to adjust to rising food prices? Of course we all have. One thing that has to be adjusted is those price books. Trends in higher prices can make your price book obsolete, since grocery food prices are rising across the board. So how can you adjust? I have a frugal confession to make. I don’t actively keep a price book. Yes, I know that they are a way of monitoring prices. So how do I even know that food prices are rising when I don’t have anything to compare them to? Okay, I have another confession. I … Continue reading

How Much Are Food Prices Really Rising?

If you are wondering exactly how much food prices have been rising, let me share with you some U.S. federal date. Compared to last year, wholesale egg prices have risen 60 percent, pasta has risen 30 percent and fresh produce has risen by 20 percent. Unfortunately, this data is a little old. It doesn’t take into consideration recent months when food prices have really been soaring. Overall, prices for food have risen by 5.8 percent above last year. And, they are expected to increase by 7.5 percent every year for the next five years. Other resources report that baby formula, … Continue reading

A Report on the Dog Days Festival

It was big doings for dogs in Nashville this weekend. It was the annual Dog Days Festival at Centennial Park, which celebrated Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and benefited the Nashville Humane Association. Of course we took Murphy. And I’m kicking myself because I forgot my camera. (Better to forget that than to forget Murph, though!) There was tons to take pictures of. I’ll try my best to paint the scene with words. Who let the dogs out? Price of admission was $5 per person (dogs got in free). The “festival grounds” was a frenzy of four-legged furry friends and … Continue reading

The Egg Price Report

What are you paying for eggs this week? In an earlier blog, Frugal Sandwiches, I mentioned how I often make egg salad sandwiches because eggs are a very frugal food. Eggs are a very perishable food, so they often go on sale when there more supply than demand. They can’t just sit on the shelf waiting for demand to increase. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) releases a report twice a week that details what is going on in the egg market. From detailing prices of fresh eggs and frozen eggs to the amount of eggs produced and broken … Continue reading

Saving Money on Frontline

This week it was time to buy more Frontline medication. I like to buy in bulk, as long as I can be assured that the meds won’t expire before the year is out. I selected 12-month packs of feline and canine Frontline and put them in my virtual shopping cart, and then was amazed at the price. $300? That seems like way more than I’ve ever paid for it before. When my husband came home, I asked him about it. Did he remember their flea/tick medicine costing this much, because I didn’t. He said no, although it was maybe $200 … Continue reading

How Far Would You Go To Pay For Your Kid’s Education?

Some parents would consider taking out a second mortgage on their homes or picking up a part-time job to help fund their child’s education, but a mom in Washington State has turned to another means to help raise cash for her son’s schooling—-begging. As in standing near a busy off-ramp near her Bellevue home and panhandling for cash. “Tuition help needed! Donate a few dollars!” Shelle Curley yells at drivers in an effort to raise nearly $47,000 so her son can attend one of the most prestigious dance schools in the country. According to reports, Curley’s 17-year-old son D.J. scored … Continue reading

Mel Gibson’s Girlfriend is Pregnant: Ex-fans Sound Off

Well, now we know what finally pushed Robyn Gibson to end her 28-year marriage to the king of hypocrisy. According to reports, Mel Gibson’s twice divorced wannabe singer girlfriend from Russia is pregnant with his love child. Sources say Mel’s 39-year-old mistress, Oksana Grigorieva, who has a 12-year-old son with actor Timothy Dalton, is delighted by the turn of events. And why not, getting knocked up by a multi, multi-millionaire means she is set for life. Last week, Grigorieva’s wealthy ex-boyfriend spoke to a British newspaper about his experience with the woman, who is allegedly carrying the “Mad Max” star’s … Continue reading
