The Grocery Reportby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 12 Apr 2008 05:24 PM
The first place I examine prices was in the baking aisle. I was in there anyway, picking up some cornstarch and baking powdered. I checked on the price of a five-pound bag of brand name unbleached flower. Three weeks ago the regular price was $2.19. Today, that regular price rose to $3.99, almost twice as much. Next, I took a look in the cereal aisle. They were having a sale on brand name cereal for 2 boxes for $4. I usually don't pick up cereal for more than $1.50 a box, but I had coupons, so I was ready to take advantage of the deal. Only one box of cereal was left on the shelf, so I had to get a rain check. But the interesting thing about that box is the weight of the contents. The cereal was listed as 12.5 ounces. Three weeks ago, that same box contained 15 ounces of cereal. My biggest shocker, or the one that I didn't expect was on glass-jarred pasta sauce. I recently switched brands to one that was offered at $.99 a jar, the lowest price I could get without sales or coupons. The sauce was very good, so I was looking forward to stocking up. The sale price on the sauce this week was $1.19 and the regular price jumped from that $.99 to $1.49! That is a 50 percent rise in price in only three weeks. One item that didn't change in pricing was frozen whole turkey at 99 cents a pound. What are these items selling for at your store?
