I am a big advocate in using rice in meals. It has always been a big staple of economical cooking. Rice goes with so many other foods, and it can be used as a filler to stretch out meals. You can even use it in deserts. With prices on other foodstuff (from pasta to meat) soaring, we have been replying even more on rice and rice dishes. Unfortunately, this may have to change, as the price of rice is inflating as much as 70 percent in some areas. One large warehouse grocery chain, Sam's Club (a division of Wal-mart) announced last night that they will be limiting sales of 20-pound bags of rice in its stores, effective immediately. This is in anticipation of an even more increased shortage and to prevent restaurants and stockpilers from stocking up on rice. Costco, another warehouse grocery club, has also been imposing limits on rice. U.S. rice futures (stock on rice) traded at an all-time high this week, due to global food shortages. While rice crops are good, there is an increased demand for rice as other foods become unavailable or too expensive. Rice is a staple food for half of the world's population. Hardest hit in terms of price increases are specialty rice, such as Basmati and Jasmine rice, as well as long-grain rice. I did try to purchase Basmati rice at our local BJ's warehouse club last month and could not find it on the shelves. BJ's, so far, has not imposed any limit on purchasing rice. I will have to not buy something else in order to keep our food budget in check. Yesterday while reading the news I saw that food prices have went up 65% since 2005. Geez, now I see why I could feed my family for $125 a week. Now $200 barely feeds us. Praying for the Lord's return.
