Three DIY Projects that Will Save You Money

One way to save money that doesn't require you to shop less is to take on different, but easy, do it yourself projects around your home that you might normally hire someone to do. Since labor is one of the more expensive costs that you can incur, it makes sense to take over and pay yourself! Chances are that your parents or grandparents did all of these things for themselves.

Here are three diy projects that you can do to save yourself some money.

Lawn care

Depending on how elaborate your lawn service is, you can save anywhere from $20 to $100 a week by mowing your own lawn. Mowing a lawn is pretty easy to do if you have a typically flat yard. If you don't, consider putting in ground cover for part of your landscaping. Most native ground cover requires little maintenance. Just trim it back every few years as needed.

Car care

While I am not suggesting that you go ahead and rebuilt a carburetor, there is a lot of routine car care that can be done very easily at home by you. Some examples are changing the oil, inflating tires, fixing flat tires, change a battery, and adding fluids. Depending on your car (older cars tend to be easier to maintain), you may be able to replace a muffler, replace timing belts or other parts.

Painting

Painting a couple of rooms can easily cost you a few thousand dollars to have it done by a professional. Getting a professional finish is usually more about taking your time than it is about knowing a specific skill. Still not convinced that you can paint? Do all of the prep work yourself, including painting on a coat of primer, and you'll cut down on your labor costs.
