Keeping Favorite Recipes in One Book

Do you have some favorite recipes that you cook maybe several times a month? If you do, are your favorite recipes all together or must you look each of them up in separate cook books every time you want to make one of them? Well I certainly have favorite recipes that I cook over and over, and after having to look up these recipes in each of the cookbooks that they come from each time that I need to prepare a shopping list, I decided to find an alternative to storing my recipes. I got a journal-type notebook (about 4″ … Continue reading

Wall Art For The Frugal Minded (2)

Continuing our creative discussion of wall art for the frugal minded, I have several more great ideas. Creating wall art is easy and saves a lot of money off store purchased items. Frame the item yourself and you’ve saved even more. Here are a few more great ideas to get you working on personalizing your home even further. Collage Art Cut photos and patterns out of papers, calendars and greeting cards collaging them together in a slightly shabby chic way. Cut the entire print to the size of the frame you want, and you have a piece of wall art … Continue reading

Reusing What You Have: Beds

It has been mentioned before, and I will say it again, reusing what you have is one of the best ways to be frugal. Many things in our home are reusable, or can serve a different purpose than that it was intended for. Beth McHugh, who writes for the Mental Health blog here at families.com, left a comment on the article I wrote – Reusing What You Have: Baby Stuff. She shared a really cute idea she had, where she turned a doll house into a book shelf. Not allowing her daughter’s outgrown doll house to go to waste, she … Continue reading

Wall Art For The Frugal Minded (1)

Browse the aisles at any store selling framed art and you’re liable to have a heart attack on the spot. Some pieces can be terribly costly, while other’s only a fraction, but still expensive. Sure, you can purchase the pictures or paintings without framing and save quite a bit of money doing it yourself, but there is an even easier and more frugal way to get some beautiful wall art and not break the bank doing it. Found Pictures Calendars, greeting cards, magazine photographs and other types of pictures can be framed and added to your walls for creative interest … Continue reading

Reusing What You Have: Baby Stuff – A Personal Account

There are very few people I know who do not have a storage area somewhere in their home, that has at least one piece of unused furniture. Usually there is more. The reasons for storing these items are as individual as the person who stored the item. For instance, for years I had stored my daughter’s beautiful cherry wood crib set because 1)it was an expensive purchase I just couldn’t see giving away for free and 2)there was always the “what if” factor, that I could possibly wind up with another baby. About three years ago (my daughter was six), … Continue reading

Tips for Not Confusing Organization with Buying More Stuff

This entire week we have been focusing on not buying more organizational products for storage and looking at what is already in the home. Frugal Living is a challenge in today’s economy so learning to see a treasure in a piece of trash is something you must learn. Here are a few tips on recognizing items for what they can be, rather than what they are. What else can be used for organizing? – Baby Food Jars – Containers used for other items (ie. Plastic Lego containers and buckets that no longer host the item, etc) – Paint Buckets, and … Continue reading

Don’t Confuse Organizing With Buying More Stuff (3)

There is still much more to discuss with organizing. And when you are trying to do it with a budget it can be challenging, but it’s possible. You have to learn to look beyond the obvious and see things for what they can do for you, and not just for the purpose they were originally intended. Containers for instance, can consolidate items. They are difficult to see into if they are not clear, so it’s important to label them. I, generally recommend using clear plastic containers when possible. Stock up when they are on sale. But don’t purchase too many … Continue reading

Don’t Confuse Organization With Buying More Stuff (2)

Yesterday we conquered a cheap and inexpensive way to organize catalogs and magazines, because everyday our mail carrier seems to bring us more and more and eventually they over run the home. So now we at least have that area of your life organized. One last tip on magazines and catalogs. They should fit perfectly on any book shelf, but if there is no room on your book shelf, either make a shelf out of something else, or place on a top shelf of a closet. Be sure to label the outside of the box so you know at a … Continue reading

Don’t Confuse Organizing With Buying More Stuff (1)

You may think that getting organized is actually an expensive task. You might even think that you have to go out and buy all those organizing neat holders, baskets, bins, and whatever else they tell you that you need to get organized and stay organized. Nope! I’m here to inform you that you do not need any of that stuff. Do not confuse “getting organized” with “buying stuff”. It is simply not the same thing! Several months ago I posted a couple of articles about having a household notebook. If you do not have a household notebook yet, or are … Continue reading
