The best part of these trendy gifts is that you can make them yourself frugally. Give gifts of your time and creativity. Here are some ideas on what passes for trendy and home made for Christmas. Jams, Jellies and Anything Canned Have you tried finding canning supplies, such as jars at your thrift store lately? It used to be that there were tons and tons of them almost free for the taking. But, with the downturn of the economy, many people are discovering the art of growing their own food and canning, which means that supplies are flying off of the shelves. If you are lucky enough to already have your own supplies or to get them inexpensively, make up some jam, some jelly or other preserve. Food is expensive, and fancy jam that is made without artificial preservatives will be welcome. Other Food Gifts Do you sense a theme? People have realized that eating out is getting a little too expensive, although it is hard to make the time to prepare meals at home. Food gifts have always be well received, but this year the trendiest type of food gift is in the form of a meal kit or a home made mix. Mix up all of those dry ingredients for your favorite muffin mix and package it with instructions for adding the wet ingredients and preparing. Develop a recipe in a box with all of the ingredients necessary and the recipe to create a family meal. Or go one step further and give a pre-made frozen meal or a coupon for a meal delivery. Other Non-Food Gifts Here are some ideas for trendy non-food gifts that are sure to please this Christmas. Gifts that reduce stress are high on the list. I am planning on making decorative pillows for family Christmas presents this year. There are books I've found at the library with fabulous quirky design ideas, much like the "monsters" used in Target's Halloween ads and in-store promotional decorations. Have fun, get way creative. I'm going to use as much fabric and materials as I can that I already have (re-purposing clothing, etc.), and only buy additional things as needed. thequeenofthecastle (413) 31 Oct 2008 08:17 AMI have very little sewing skills, but even with my basics skills and hand sewing I was able to make a doll blanket and pillow for my daughters doll cradle using some of her old pink receiving blankets. I also recently saw a great idea for hotglueing cinnamon sticks to the outside of a jar and wrapping it with ribbon and then putting in a tea light candle. then wrap it in a cute ribbon. As the candle warms the jar the cinnamon really smells great. This would be a great thing to add to a gift basket with maybe some homemade pumpkin muffins.
