How to Water Your Plants During a Drought

Water, water. Sometimes it’s not everywhere. Sometimes there is no rain to be found, not for days and weeks. This is scary for farmers and deeply frustrating for gardeners. In a drought, plants die, and if you rely on these plants for food and shade, this can be very difficult. How can you weather drought and plan for future dry times as well? Let some of your plants go dormant. Lawns and moss will go brown. This is fine. Keep your lawn a little longer before the dry season begins so that it will make as much shade and conserve … Continue reading

How Much Water to Drink in Labor?

In the eleven years since I got pregnant with our first baby, I’ve often laughed at changing recommendations. Both during various pregnancies and with each baby there seems to be a new recommendation or a change from past ones. Recent research may lead to changes in drinking water during labor. With my kids, the nurses always started by asking how “well hydrated” I was when I got to the hospital. Eventually, they’d want to give IV fluids to “keep me well hydrated.” Similar advice is seen in pregnancy literature everywhere. As a result of these recommendations, women often begin drinking … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Are There Toxins in Breastmilk?

Question: I heard somewhere that formula is considered more hygienic because it doesn’t contain toxins. However, our bodies constantly consume toxins which pass into the breast milk and could poison the baby–is that true? Is it better to formula feed your baby to avoid the toxins? Yep, It’s True This is an example of faulty conclusions based on accurate data. It is absolutely 100% true that: a) formula is technically more hygienic than breast milk b) that any toxins we consume pass through to our breast milk c) those toxins could harm our babies What’s not true is the idea … Continue reading

Vinegar and Water – The Perfect Frugal Combination

Have you ever noticed that everyday there seems to be a new household cleaner of some kind made available? And that half the time the product doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to or not as well as it should? With the cost of all these new cleaners, one would think they would be the miracle cures. Aside from the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser which I seriously should buy stock in because I buy so many of them, there aren’t many other products out there that I have found multiple uses for, that work. However, going back to old fashioned … Continue reading

An Afternoon At The Fair

Yesterday, I took Dylan and Blake to the Tunbridge World’s Fair in nearby Tunbridge, Vermont. There are many fairs and harvest festivals in New England in the fall and I thought that it would be a fun way to spend the afternoon with the boys. It was so cute to see the excited look on his face as we went towards the gate and he began to see the fairgrounds. Once we got inside, Dylan told me that he wanted to play games first. We played a couple of kid – friendly games and he won a few little prizes. … Continue reading

The Forest Garden

Some of us have vast, open expanses to play with in our gardens. These expanses are sunny, and the soil is good for vegetables. Others? Well, if you’re like me and you live in the Pacific Northwest, rain is more common than sunshine, and forests dominate the landscape. This is lovely for walking, but it can be much more challenging if you like to grow the traditional sun-loving vegetable crops. What’s a gardener to do? Whether you have one big tree in your garden or you live in the middle of a forest, you can grow food. Forests are naturally … Continue reading

Beautiful Gardens

Am I the only one itching to plant a garden? As soon as we have a warm day or two I’m day dreaming about my yard. I have a confession, I’ve already planted peas and will get the beets and lettuce in the ground this weekend. Planting a vegetable garden does wonders for your budget and your eating habits. Yes, growing tomatoes takes longer than going to the store but just imagine how wonderful that salsa will taste when you can say it all came out of your garden. Also, when you grow it you know what chemicals it’s been … Continue reading
