christmas This season, many people may be finding themselves without the ability to travel to big family gatherings this year. There could be many reasons. Here are some things that you can do to enjoy the holidays, even if you have to do it at home alone.

What are some of the reasons that traveling for Christmas may not be affordable this year? Perhaps it is just a matter of the cost of plane tickets, gas or car repairs. It could also be a bad idea to take off extra time at work when there may be the threat of lay offs or cut backs at work. Perhaps you had to relocate away from family due to job loss. Whatever the case, look at the positive side of things to make this a great holiday.

Be Honest

Honesty is the best policy. Break it to the relatives that although you would like to be there, you simply cant afford to travel this year. If they question this, you can offer more details or not, but most family members should understand.

Keep It Simple

While you may be sad and disappointed at first that you will be missing a big Christmas, but look on the positive side. Keeping it simple may relieve a lot of stress. You can spend the day relaxing instead of rushing around, fighting traffic and all of the other stress that comes with traveling. Stay in, build a fire, enjoy a big breakfast and savor the present opening.

Stay in Contact

Just because you can't travel, it doesn't mean that you can't celebrate with family. Stay in touch using the phone and the Internet. E-mail or post your blog with regular updates throughout the day and encourage your relatives to do the same.

Get Together with Friends

If you find yourself in need of a large gathering for the holidays, get together with friends who might also be staying home for the holidays. Enjoy a meal together, or just share desert. It will be a way of getting some social interaction and festive noise.

Keep the Elaborate Meal

If Christmas just isn't Christmas without the elaborate meal and all of the trimmings, go ahead and have it, even if it is just for your immediate family. You can always half recipes or just use the opportunity to freeze leftovers and stock the freezer.
