What Would You Buy If You Had $30 to Spend? (1)by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 05 Jan 2007 03:57 PM
Over the holiday, we went shopping at Kohl's, a smaller department store that is known for its good deals and prices. They were having a huge sale on December 23, so I headed there to purchase my father-in-law's gift, one of those coffee makers with a built in grinder. It does pretty much everything for coffee, other than handing the cup to you along with your slippers. After confirming the choice with my mother-in-law, we knew my father-in-law would just love it. While I was there, I also picked up several other gifts for my hubby and the kids, getting some great discounts. After I paid for my purchases, the cashier handed me a certificate for $30. Apparently I had unknowingly earned it by my purchases. This was the equivalent of a $30 gift card to the store! I didn't have to make a minimum purchase--the $30 could be used for anything. For someone who probably could spend $30 on an entire wardrobe for a small child, there was some inner conflict on how to spend this money. I probably could have procrastinated forever, but the certificate expired on January 6th. So, during one of the many showings on our house, we headed over to Kohl's. I took my oldest, the five-year-old boy, in the store with me to help me decide. My husband told me to get a shirt to go with my nice new jeans he gave me for Christmas, I've been wanting a pair of those high heeled, high legged boots that are in fashion, and there was so much we could use around the house. I could go the practical route and get everyone underwear, but where was the fun in that? Seasonal merchandise was sure to be for sale with a heavy discount. But seasonal stuff had to be stored. The pressure was almost too much for me. With a bewildered look back at my husband, I slowly exited the car and let my son pull me along into the store. In What Would You Buy If You Had $30 to Spend? (2), I'll share some more of my debate. Do you think I actually bought something, or did I put purchasing off to another day? What would you have purchased? Learn more about Mary Ann Romans ![]() Mary Ann Romans is a freelance writer, wife and mother of three children.
