Why Live Frugally?

A question that often comes up is why should anyone live so frugally? This is usually followed up by, "Don't you have a life?" Once and a while someone might say, "I could never live like that. I'd rather work than wash out baggies."

Those questions are important, even the abrasive one about baggies. They prove that many people don't really understand a frugal lifestyle. I live frugally, and yes, I do have a life; a very good one. I do work for an income, although it is only part time. I seldom wash out baggies because, well I don't use them. But if it came down to it, I'd rather wash out baggies than miss out on the benefits of frugal living.

So why live frugally?

1. I can spend more time with my family. Frugal living allows me to spend less time working and more time at home. The time we spend together tends to be focused on each other or on projects that we work on together, rather than some traditional forms of more expensive entertainment. We get outside more, read more and learn new skills.

2. I can live with less debt. Spending less means that we have less debt, and that gives us a great peace of mind. Any extra money can be saved for any emergencies or hard times ahead.

3. I can have more options in my life. If I spend less than I earn, I can use the extra money in many ways, from charitable donations to an early retirement. Frugal living is a choice, so I can choose to do some things that are worth my time and not others. I will probably never dumpster dive for food, but I am perfectly happy buying used clothing. Others may not set foot in a thrift store, but they may practice curb shopping for toys. That is the nice thing about frugal living; there are many options out there, and you can do what fits your family.

What some other benefits are there to living frugally?

I, by no means am frugal, but I strive to live as frugally as possible. My reason for that is b/c my children are more important than anything in this world. When my kids grow up and move on all the "stuff" is still there.

I am so glad I found this website! It is so refreshing to hear about other people living below their means. I live in a very affluent area where many of the women wear designer clothing and carry designer handbags; I would never do that because it doesn't suit my personality. Sometimes I feel as though I am being judged for not keeping up with the Joneses (translation: being in debt). Your articles are very enlightening and you have excellent tips. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the support Frugalchica. We are all in this together! I can relate to your situation wholeheartedly. The best thing to do is to surround yourself with people who are like-minded. Even in an affluent area, there may be one or two of them hiding.

Laura,

I find that the less stuff we have, the more quality time we spend with each other! Just yesterday, the kids and I did some cooking, and we had a great time.

I absolutely love this article. I was raised by parents who are the Joneses, and it drives me crazy because I enjoy the simple things in life. I think it is wonderful that people want to live below their means. Its the simple things in life (christmas morning breakfast, cartoons with dad, going to beach with little sister, park with my daughter) that mean the most in life.

We started frugality because we had no choice. We live in Pittsburgh where, 20 years ago now, the steel industry crashed. Unemployment city-wide was 25% and unemployment in steel and steel-related industries was 64%. It was harrowing. A local paper, now defunct, called "The Mill Hunk Herald" ran articles on how to keep from becoming homeless. "No matter what it takes, pay your rent/mortgage. Because once you have to live on the streets, it takes everything out of you." It was astonishing. The lines at unemployment were telling: There were 12 unemployment offices in Pittsburgh. Each had ten lines, each line refreshed every thirty minutes. And that doesn't count the people whose unemployment had run out. Long story short, we learned how to live in an "under-economy". Nowadays, things have improved some. Pittsburgh lost 750,000 people, but 300,000 people are still here. I have a job netting $1000 a month and that feels ling a luxury. All the utilities are paid! I can buy groceries! And frugality has become second nature. It's amazing when you learn what you don't really need. Empowering, even. God bless!
